ISTANBUL – The International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) has concluded a distinguished international scholarly course that took place over three days (from August 4-6, 2025) in the city of Istanbul. The course, held under the title "Qur'anic Deduction according to the Jurisprudence of Balance (Fiqh al-Mizan)," was attended by a select group of scholars and researchers from more than 15 countries worldwide.
The conference, hosted by the Waqf of Muslim Scholars Center in Istanbul, aimed to revive a balanced methodology in the principles of Islamic jurisprudence (Usul al-Fiqh) for engaging with the Holy Qur'an and responding to the needs of the modern era, while preserving the immutable principles of Islam.
In a statement, Dr. Ali al-Qaradaghi, President of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, declared: "The primary objective of this course is to lay a scholarly foundation for the concept of 'Fiqh al-Mizan,' which serves as a methodology to regulate the process of deriving legal rulings, connect the particular with the universal, and balance the higher objectives of Sharia with the sacred texts."
The IUMS President also noted that "Fiqh al-Mizan is not just a theory, but a profound Qur'anic value. If we apply it in our understanding of reality and our dealings with people, we can present a more balanced and capable religious discourse to unite the Ummah."
The course covered several important themes, including:
The methodology for disciplined renewal in the science of Usul al-Fiqh.
Discussing the challenges and issues of contemporary reality facing scholars and preachers.
Methods for activating the higher objectives of Sharia (Maqasid) without using them as a pretext to neglect the texts.
Formulating new tools for deduction that take into account global changes.
Dr. al-Qaradaghi praised the high level of dialogue and the mature contributions of the participants, emphasizing that the course provided an opportunity to build a network among active scholars who aim to achieve a sound intellectual renaissance worthy of the Islamic Ummah.
In conclusion, the President of the Union thanked all parties who contributed to the organization of the course and expressed his hope that these efforts would become a building block in the renewal of Islamic thought.
