Prof. Dr. Ali al-Qaradaghi Discusses the Course of Development in the Muslim World in a Seminar

DOHA
On Saturday evening, December 27, the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) organized a seminar titled "The Course of Development in the Muslim World Over a Century – An Islamic Perspective." The seminar was held at the Union's headquarters in Doha, attended by a number of scholars, researchers, and students of knowledge.

During the seminar, the President of the IUMS, Prof. Dr. Ali al-Qaradaghi, stated that the course of development in the Muslim world has faced accumulated challenges over the past century. He also emphasized the crucial need to review the development models currently being implemented and to open a scholarly dialogue about alternatives that are more compatible with the specific characteristics of Muslim societies.

Prof. Dr. Ali al-Qaradaghi pointed to the problems within a number of Western economic theories when applied in Muslim countries, noting their primary focus on the material dimension. In contrast, he presented the Islamic concept of comprehensive development, which is founded on a balance between economic, social, and spiritual aspects.

Through contributions from the audience, the seminar addressed a number of jurisprudential and intellectual issues, including matters related to Zakat on marine animals, a critique of the theory of unidimensional development, in addition to discussions on Imam al-Ghazali's methodology in his book, Ihya' Ulum al-Din.

The organization of this seminar is part of a series of intellectual activities conducted by the Union, aiming to discuss intellectual and developmental issues in the Muslim world and to promote scholarly dialogue.
