In a strongly worded statement, the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) has vehemently condemned the burning of a copy of the Holy Quran in Sweden, an act carried out with the approval of the Swedish government, describing it as a "disgraceful, shameful, and cowardly act."
The Union called on Islamic governments to take a "serious, decisive, and strong stance" to defend the sanctities of the Muslim Ummah, foremost among them the Holy Quran. In this context, it urged them to summon the Swedish ambassadors in their respective countries and to pressure Sweden to issue an official apology and take all necessary measures to prevent the recurrence of this heinous act.
At the same time, the Union praised the "courageous stance" of the Arab and Islamic nations that have already taken appropriate measures and condemned the act.
The statement, signed by the Union's President Dr. Habib Salem Saqqaf Jifri and Secretary-General Prof. Dr. Ali al-Qaradaghi, declared: "These cowardly attempts will in no way diminish the greatness of the Holy Quran; rather, they are solely the result of hidden hatred and animosity within a few sick individuals."
The Union also issued a stark warning about the "disastrous consequences" of such behaviors on peaceful coexistence, multiculturalism, and human rights, recalling Europe's history of two World Wars that were ignited by fanaticism and arrogance.
