Mauritanian President Welcomes Senior IUMS Delegation

On Friday, May 25, 2025, His Excellency Mohamed Ould Ghazouani, the President of Mauritania, received a high-level delegation from the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) at the presidential palace. The delegation was led by Professor Dr. Ali Mohiuddin al-Qaradaghi and his deputy, the esteemed Sheikh Mohamed El-Hassan Ould Dedew. Several important issues were discussed during the formal and productive meeting.

At the outset of the meeting, Dr. al-Qaradaghi presented a detailed overview of the IUMS's mission, objectives, and activities around the world. In turn, President Ghazouani expressed his great admiration for the Union's role and impact, praising its efforts in serving the causes of the Ummah.

In the economic sphere, Dr. al-Qaradaghi put forward two practical proposals:

  1. Issuing Islamic Bonds (Sukuk): Aimed at financing major housing and development projects, including a proposal for the construction of 10,000 residential units.

  2. The "Blended Social Financing" Initiative: This concept encourages banks to allocate 10% of their financing to projects with a social dimension, at a reduced profit margin (around 3%) to support low-income communities.

Both ideas were warmly welcomed by the Mauritanian President, who expressed his appreciation for Dr. al-Qaradaghi's innovative ideas in the field of Islamic economics.

Another key focus of the meeting was the Palestinian cause. Dr. al-Qaradaghi urged President Ghazouani to intensify international pressure to halt Israeli aggression against the Gaza Strip. He also commended the strong solidarity shown by the Mauritanian government and people, including their campaigns to collect aid for the Palestinian people.
