Statement from the International Union of Muslim Scholars Regarding the Hamdaniya Fire

The International Union of Muslim Scholars extends its sincere condolences, deepest sympathy, and heartfelt solidarity to Iraq, its people, its president, and its government, as well as to the families of the victims who lost their loved ones in the tragic fire at the wedding hall in Hamdaniya district, Nineveh Governorate.

The incident resulted in the loss of dozens of lives and left many others injured. This tragic event necessitates a comprehensive investigation involving all officials and supervisors who approved the construction of a building lacking proper safety specifications. This is especially crucial in Iraq, where fire incidents have been on the rise. According to Iraqi statistics, over 19,000 fire incidents have occurred in the year 2023 alone.

In the face of this heartbreaking catastrophe, we express our full support for the beloved Iraqi people and emphasize our commitment to assisting and cooperating with them. We pray to Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful, to encompass the victims with His mercy, grant their families patience and solace, and bestow upon the victims the status of martyrs. We also pray for the swift recovery of the injured and their safe return to their families.

Allah Almighty says: "And whatever calamity befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned; and He pardons much." (Ash-Shura: 30)

Meaning: Any affliction or calamity that befalls you is a result of the actions and deeds you committed by your own will (but He is such a merciful God) that He overlooks most of your sins and mistakes.

We ask Allah Almighty to protect Iraq and its people from all evil and to bless them with goodness, security, and stability.

"Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return."
