Fiqh al-Mizan

The book "Fiqh al-Mizan" (Jurisprudence of Balance) is one of the most profound and recent works by Professor Ali Mohiuddin Al-Qaradaghi, which has gained significant resonance across the Islamic world. The book is a new analytical and foundational study that aims to present a modern methodology for better understanding the texts of the Quran and Sunnah and performing contemporary Ijtihad (independent legal reasoning).

This work emphasizes the concept of "Mizan" (the Balance), which Almighty God sent down alongside the "Book" (Scripture) to ensure that justice is established in human vision, worldview, and behavior. The author explains that the universe and Sharia are both built upon the principle of "duality"; therefore, our understanding must remain balanced between revelation and reason, this world and the hereafter, and worship and the development of the earth.

The primary goal of the book is to overcome division and fragmentation within the Islamic Ummah. By returning to these original "scales" of balance, it seeks to reduce intellectual and sectarian disunity. The book is not merely theoretical; it applies these balances to various fields, such as war and peace. It emphasizes that the "scale of war" is distinct from the "scale of Dawah" (preaching) and that they must not be conflated. Furthermore, it establishes precise criteria in the fields of economics, Sharia-compliant politics, and family matters to maintain balance and justice between duties and rights.

Ultimately, Fiqh al-Mizan is presented as an independent and complementary science to the fields of Usul al-Fiqh (Foundations of Jurisprudence) and Maqasid al-Sharia (Objectives of Sharia), serving as a key to a correct and contemporary understanding of the Islamic religion.
